An Author Interview with Chris Garvey

In our opinion, Chris Garvey is an all-around superstar who promotes positivity and a growth mindset. We have published his children’s book Tales of Hidden Strength from his Whispers of the Wolf Within Series today. Here’s what he had to say about what inspired him and why he felt this book was needed.

Tell us about your book.

This book was created to help inspire and empower children to find their inner strength and self-belief. It is to show them that they can overcome any situation in a positive way and achieve anything they set their mind to. Mindset is the greatest tool we have, yet it isn’t taught in school. I wanted to help children understand the superpowers they all have so they can learn not only how to handle all situations in life but to thrive on them. The book follows five children on their journey with their spirit wolves. Each child has different situations to overcome, and with the help of their spirit wolves, they find the inner strength and self-belief to deal with them positively.

How did your stories and characters develop?

I imagined different types of children with different characteristics, each unique and with their own superpowers and abilities. I thought about all the different scenarios children can encounter and came up with stories which suited each character. I let my imagination run wild and wrote a lot of the book whilst my imagination was throwing stories at me. I just went with my instinct and then started piecing it together and trying to get my message across in each chapter. I used my knowledge of dealing with problems and turned them into situations children may find themselves in and how they can positively react to them.

What is your opinion of the necessity of this book?

I realised children needed this after seeing how mine struggled with certain things and knowing it wasn’t just mine; it was children in general. At a time when mental health is on the rise and the fact that children aren’t taught the power of a growth mindset or how they can adapt and overcome difficult situations, I realised how helping them understand this at an early age can help give them a massive advantage in life. I wish I was taught this when I was younger. It would have helped me massively deal with adversity and challenges a lot better and look at them from a different perspective, giving me a better outcome than what I got at the time.

What was the catalyst to start your book?

My daughter struggled a lot a couple of years ago. She was seven and had a fixed mindset. She didn’t have much self-belief or resilience, and her confidence was at its lowest point. I wanted to help her, so I tried numerous ways. At the time, I realised that the best way to start would have been in a book so she could understand the concept of having a growth mindset and learn about it by following the characters in the book.

Over the last couple of years, her transformation has been incredible, and she is now one of the most resilient kids I know—full of self-belief and confidence. I want to help as many kids as possible as there is nobody else who is doing anything like this, so I decided to write the book so other children could get inspired and start to realise that they too can unlock that hidden strength and the full potential they all have.

How long did it take to write?

It took roughly about two months to write. I wrote parts of it whenever I could whilst working around my other business.

You wear lots of hats in your life. Which one do you identify with most?

I do wear lots of hats, but the one that gives me purpose and the one I identify with the most is Wolf Instinct Mindset. It’s the business that gives me the most satisfaction because I feel as though this is my mission in life to help inspire children. The joy I get from serving those who need it most and helping give them the tools they need at a time when they need it most is incredible. I wish I had known what I know now when I was younger, as I would have made a lot of different decisions that would have given me a more positive outcome. I only realised the power of mindset seven years ago and the power of a growth mindset. It has transformed my life, and I know helping children understand it will transform theirs as well.

Chris embraces life with positivity and illustrates that you can do anything.

What does your family think of the book?

My family love the book, especially my two young children. They are all very proud of it and the message I am getting across. Both my children have read it, and they have learned a lot from the stories. They are my biggest supporters of what I am trying to do, and they are both excited that they are characters in the book.

If you could pick anyone famous to read your stories, who would it be and why?

This is a great question and a really tough one to answer. I think Robin Williams would have done a fantastic job of reading these stories.

What kind of books did you read as a child?

As a child, I loved reading books like Goosebumps, Captain Underpants, Arthur, the Magic School Bus, and Biff, Chip, and Kipper.

You’re watching TV and wish you were part of a writing team; what are you watching?

I think it has to be Harry Potter. I love those films.

Any advice for a new writer?

I would just say get started. Don’t wait around for the perfect moment; just make a start and keep at it whenever you can. You will begin to see the stories come together and unfold. I realised that just doing that meant that it was getting done, but because the stories were floating around in my mind a lot, I came up with new ideas and alterations to make it even better. These ideas could come at any time, especially when I was driving or in bed.

What was the best thing about working with TAUK Publishing?

The full experience was incredible. From the initial meeting with Estelle, I had a good feeling about her and the business. As time went on, the feedback was always incredible, whether positive or constructive. Once the book started to be published, Michelle was brilliant with the storyboard, and Lisa was fantastic with the illustrations. The full process was extremely easy for me, very professional and most of all, the end product was amazing. I have no hesitation in recommending them. In fact, I have already recommended two people.

What is next for Chris Garvey?

I have already got book two and the follow-on in this series written. I will be instructing TAUK Publishing to publish that one for me as well. I will be starting book three soon. I also have another story I would like to write, so I will be looking at getting a start on that in the near future. Each book has the same purpose of helping children unlock their potential.

Chris’s book is now available on Amazon.
