At TAUK Publishing, we love celebrating the stories behind the stories. We recently spoke with the author of A Lamb’s Tale to learn more about the inspiration behind Lambstail’s journey, the love of nature woven through the book, and the message of kindness and friendship at its heart.
What inspired you to write A Lamb’s Tale?
The field of sheep behind our cottage outside Chichester in 1998, when my late mum, Joy, was staying with us, encouraged me to write a story.
What makes Lambstail different from the other lambs?
He finds it hard to make friends easily and is a ‘loner’.
What themes were most important for you to explore?
The countryside and other animals, fun, inclusion, friendships, caring.
If you could spend a day with one character from the story, who would it be?
Lambstail himself!
Do you plan your stories in detail or let them develop naturally?
They develop naturally
Who were your first readers?
Good friends at first, as it was an Easter surprise for our two grandsons, Teddy and Harry, whom I have dedicated the book to!
Were there any books or authors that inspired you growing up?
Black Beauty, The Famous Five, Jungle Book, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella!
Why do you think stories set in nature appeal to children?
They can use their imagination and learn to respect the countryside, animals, wildlife, etc.
What does Lambstail’s journey teach readers about friendship?
Never think you are alone, and one act of kindness to others can make all the difference.
How did you feel when you saw the finished book for the first time?
Very excited and proud! To think this manuscript had lain forgotten since 1998 until having a clear out, late 2024, in a suitcase under our bed!

What do you hope readers feel when they finish the book?
Happy! Smiling! But also knowing a kind, compassionate act can bring unexpected blessings!
